Many projects have developed since 2000 as to how I work with
young children. After a four year residency at Bilston Nursery
School this allowed me to develop further ideas of uses of
the arts with children, parents and staff. Work was developed
using philosophies from Reggio Emilia which focuses on developing
children's learning through discussion and working with smaller
groups. I have also worked with Staff and resident artists
at Bilston Craft Gallery developing work with young children.
Many
other settings within the West Midlands, Warwickshire, Worcestershire
and Nottinghamshire have benefited form having an artist in
residence, allowing staff and children to think outside the
box. During this year schools have included Highfields Nursery
in Birmingham, Ashton under Hill playgroup and Sure Start
Blakenall.
Work
being developed now includes sculpture, painting, land art,
shadows and light, den building and textiles. Throughout the
sessions the children's journeys are documented through photographs
and dialogue. After each session, the children’s interests
are recorded and used to plan for the next session so we can
follow the direction the children wish to follow rather than
imposing our views as adults.
